  Laser Pens

Maidenhead Astronomical Society may use Laser Pens as a pointer during outreach events and talks. Any such use will comply with our Laser Pen Policy, which may be downloaded from here (.pdf)

Essentially, only responsible adults pre-approved by MAS are allowed to use a laser pointer at an outreach event. Children under the age of 18 and non-approved adults are not permitted to use the laser pen at any time. Any member of the public bringing their own device (without pre-approval) is asked not to use it during one of our events (and will be asked to leave if they are not willing to comply with this request).

  Future Public Events

This page is dedicated to events promoted by Maidenhead Astronomical Society aimed at bringing an awareness and appreciation of astronomy to the general public. Almost all of the Events listed here are run by MAS (the few that are not are plainly marked)

Details of future planned events are limited to those open to the general public (Members should look in the Members Only section for details of future events not open to the public - which includes most of our local Outreach activities (schools, cubs, brownies etc)).

Future events are listed in date order, next planned first. Be aware that events can change (usually due to the weather :-) ) so please check nearer the event before making a journey

Note. MAS holds Public Liability Insurance via our membership of Federation of Astronomical Societies.
Our Policy Document for 2017-18 is available as a PDF download here

Reports from our Outreach & Event activity

Here you will find reports of MAS events held in the last 10 years or so (i.e. since the MAS web site effectively 'took over' from printed newsletters as the primary means of 'reporting back' to the membership). Some details have been removed to allow for public viewing

The Members Only section contains details of MAS History going back to our formation in 1957

Note that this page does not include Observing session reports (which have a separate page)

(-) 11 Jan 2014 Stargazing LIVE 2014

MAS Stargazing Live! at Braywick, Saturday Jan 11th, 2014 report by the Chairman (webmaster edited from emails), photos by Tim, Percy and Lesley M One week to the event and my house has been taken over by Stargazing Live calendar booklets.  I asked for 250 saying we usually had between 200-400 people attend and we used overstock for our 'Outreach' events. They have sent 400 !! This years are full size A4 (rather then the A5's of last year) in 8 large boxes, taking up more room than usual. You can download the SGL 2014 calender (PDF) from the BBC website. I just Googled Stargazing Live and our event came up halfway on page 1 and no other events came up until halfway on page 2, so we should get a good turn-out, plus with the forecast looking OK, I'm hoping we will be able to see more than the Moon and Jupiter. It would be good to focus on some of the galaxies mentioned on the BBC programmes too. If you didn't see it, they covered the Pole Star a few times, finding the Plough (Great Bear - Ursa Major) then the Little Bear (Ursa Minor) and some nearby Galaxies. Jim (who will be running the presentations) will be focusing on finding these through telescopes, with a 10-15 minute talk on 'what can be seen now' and then on what can be seen the rest of the year, highlighting the events mentioned in the BBC broadcasts. Photo: ../Outreach_&_Events/photos/2014_SGL_Img_3318_processed.jpgPhoto: ../Outreach_&_Events/photos/2014_SGL-IMG_0924.jpgOn the night and it was obvious that this was our best attended event to date as it was non-stop. Despite having a 'doors open at 6.15pm' the first people turned up before we were fully set up at 5.25pm !  By 6pm we had queues waiting at the door to come in as well as gathering around the telescopes as members completed their alignments. Kristina and Andy manned the reception desk exceptionally well and we managed to get most people to sign in with name, adult/child count, home town and email. This gives us accurate figures as to who came in to the talks/reception area, but we know that some people only go to the telescopes and don't sign in, so the actual numbers would be higher. So signed in numbers, excluding members/volunteers were 349  adults and 170 children  = 519 !! This is a huge number for a local society and, with seating for about 30, Jim had to deliver his 15 minute talks on 'the sky tonight and this year' non-stop back-to-back all evening. Well done Jim!

Photo: ../Outreach_&_Events/photos/2014_SGL-Img_3320_50pc.jpgOutside we had 14 telescopes set up but the huge number of visitors meant that queues formed at every one during most of the night (despite the cold). Both the 'on-site' and 'down the road' car parks quickly filled, with visitors overflowing into the neighbouring streets. People came from as far away as Swindon and London, as well as almost everywhere in the local area (later analysis shows people from Swindon, Rickmansworth, West Dulwich, Southall, Ealing, Twickenham, Hampton, Thame, Gerrards Cross, Reading, Bracknell, Binfield, Tadley, Winnersh, Woodley, Wokingham, Ascot, Virginia Water, Sandhurst, Sunningdale, Warfield, and nearer from High Wycombe, Blackwater, Holyport, Bourne End, Flackwell Heath, Cookham, Marlow, Burnham, Taplow, Windsor, Datchet, Slough, Colnbrook and of course Maidenhead itself).

Photo: ../Outreach_&_Events/photos/2014_SGL-IMG_4854a1.jpgPhoto: ../Outreach_&_Events/photos/2014_SGL-IMG_0926.jpgAll the calenders went, and although we printed 150 'quiz sheets' (from the BBC website) we ran out of those too. The Quiz was hugely popular with the children. Andy has taken them home to mark and find a winner for each quiz who will win a Moon or Planet DVD.

Quiz winners from our Stargazing Live Event 11th January 2014 were:
Victoria and Rebbecca G. - joint prize winner in our ‘Stargazing’ Quiz
Robert M. - prize winner in our ‘Crossword’
Isabella D. - Prize winner in our ‘Fact & Fiction’ Quiz
(all the winners have been individually contacted and notified)

A very big Thank You to all those that took part, and I confirm that once again we managed to break even !
