Laser Pens |
Maidenhead Astronomical Society may use Laser Pens as a pointer during outreach events and talks. Any such use will comply with our Laser Pen Policy, which may be downloaded from here (.pdf)
Essentially, only responsible adults pre-approved by MAS are allowed to use a laser pointer at an outreach event. Children under the age of 18 and non-approved adults are not permitted to use the laser pen at any time. Any member of the public bringing their own device (without pre-approval) is asked not to use it during one of our events (and will be asked to leave if they are not willing to comply with this request).
Future Public Events |
This page is dedicated to events promoted by Maidenhead Astronomical Society aimed at bringing an awareness and appreciation of astronomy to the general public. Almost all of the Events listed here are run by MAS (the few that are not are plainly marked)
Details of future planned events are limited to those open to the general public (Members should look in the Members Only section for details of future events not open to the public - which includes most of our local Outreach activities (schools, cubs, brownies etc)).
Future events are listed in date order, next planned first. Be aware that events can change (usually due to the weather :-) ) so please check nearer the event before making a journey
Note. MAS holds Public Liability Insurance via our membership of Federation of Astronomical Societies. The Policy Document for 2022-23 (pdf) is available on request (it can be found in the Members section)

Reports from our Outreach & Event activity |
Here you will find reports of MAS events held in the last 10 years or so (i.e. since the MAS web site effectively 'took over' from printed newsletters as the primary means of 'reporting back' to the membership). Some details have been removed to allow for public viewing

(-) 24 Oct 2015 Cavendish Lab - (Members coach trip)
Saturday 24th October, Members coach trip to Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge
Report by Steve B.
This was a special tour, not available to the public, by a member of the staff who took us around the Mullard Cavendish Laboratory site at Cambridge.
Our Guide was one of the Engineering Staff who had worked on building many of the Radio Telescopes and other radio astronomy projects on the site. He was not shy in sharing his extensive knowledge of Cavendish Labs contributions to radio astronomy.
He started with a quick tour of the 'relics Museum' which included components from a German WW2 'Wurzburg' radar dish which had been 'acquired' by the Labs after the war and pressed into service for radio astronomy use = a true example of 'swords into ploughshares' !
He then took us on a hugely interesting guided walk to many of the old arrays and dishes from the 50's onward, right up to the new prototypes being built for future projects, some of which were being tested today !
It was a Cavendish array that received the famous 'LGM-1' (Little Green Men) signal that excited the SETI community (but actually led to the discovery of Pulsars, a supernovae remnant), by Bell and Hewish, in 1967/8. For the full story, see here
The site is approx 10 acres in size and our visit there took about 3 1/2 hours (from about 11 am to 2.30pm). Much of the visit was walking around the outdoor array site during which time there were a few threatening drops of rain !
Many of us finished our packed lunches 'on the move' although some had planned for a late lunch after the tour when we visited Cambridge town center for a couple of hours before it really started to rain just as we were being picked up for the trip back to Maidenhead.
Here are a few of the many photos taken during the day :-
Left: Our first sight of a radio-astronomy aerial (it's the left of center - the one to the lower right is a real washing line !)
Right: Museum entry for the WW2 'booty'
MAS members well wrapped up for the walk (photo by Tim)
Left: A movable dish of the 'One Mile Telescope', the first to use Earth-rotation aperture synthesis and used in the later half of the 1960's to produce the Cambridge 5C catalogue of radio sources (at 408 MHz, 75cm, and later at 1.4GHz (the 21 cm line)). In the background you can see two movable dishes of the half-mile array. Both arrays are now retired.
Right: the One Mile Telescope control room, positioned under the fixed dish
Left: Looking back along the tracks at the half mile array (in the foreground), you can see a movable disk of the One Mile array (along with it's attached 'receiver hut' (white)) and behind that just make out the fixed dish and the redbrick control room of the One Mile array (photo by Tim)
Right: Looking toward the far end of the One Mile track at the 3rd movable half-mile dish, and directly behind that, the fixed half-mile dish and it's control room
The main working multi-dish Ryle Telescope set, now being used as the 'Arcminute Microkelvin Imager Large Array' (essentially, noise cancelling for the AMI Small Array).
This is what we had all come to see, a working radio telescope = even more impressive when (by pure luck) they all (but one) started moving from one part of the sky to another whilst we watched (right) !
The ultra-low-noise AMI (Arcminute Microkelvin Imager) Small Array - no doubt we will be hearing from them if anyone forgot to turn off their mobile phone :-)
Left: Remains of the "four-acre" 'Interplanetary Scintillation Array' telescope (aka 'big ear') that was instrumental( :-) ) in the discovery of Pulsars (and led to the 1974 Nobel Prize for Antony Hewish and Martin Ryle - and the controversy over Jocelyn Bell's omission)
Right: Jocelyn Bell stands beside the aerial in it's heyday (no, not one of my photos = I found it on the Internet)
Left: Foreground - remains of the '4C' 178 MHz (1.7 m) array used in the 1960's to map the galaxy for the Fourth Cambridge Survey (still in use today). Background left - the One Mile array movable dish (along with its receiver hut)
Right: the 32m e-MERLIN dish (actually, it's in the fields 'next door'), Cambridge contribution to the VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometer) National Radio Astronomy Facility
Duxford aerodrome is 'just down the road' from the labs and aircraft are a frequency( :-) ) cause of unexpected radio interference (heres a photo of one that flew overhead toward the end of the tour)
Members of the Society admire the 'xMaStree' array, specifically designed to detect extraterrestrial-sleigh-like-objects. Scheduled to go 'live' by the last week of this year, it will soon be gathering data it is hoped will one day will help scientists establish the existence of Santa (photo, right, by Colin)
