Laser Pens |
Maidenhead Astronomical Society may use Laser Pens as a pointer during outreach events and talks. Any such use will comply with our Laser Pen Policy, which may be downloaded from here (.pdf)
Essentially, only responsible adults pre-approved by MAS are allowed to use a laser pointer at an outreach event. Children under the age of 18 and non-approved adults are not permitted to use the laser pen at any time. Any member of the public bringing their own device (without pre-approval) is asked not to use it during one of our events (and will be asked to leave if they are not willing to comply with this request).
Future Public Events |
This page is dedicated to events promoted by Maidenhead Astronomical Society aimed at bringing an awareness and appreciation of astronomy to the general public. Almost all of the Events listed here are run by MAS (the few that are not are plainly marked)
Details of future planned events are limited to those open to the general public (Members should look in the Members Only section for details of future events not open to the public - which includes most of our local Outreach activities (schools, cubs, brownies etc)).
Future events are listed in date order, next planned first. Be aware that events can change (usually due to the weather :-) ) so please check nearer the event before making a journey
Note. MAS holds Public Liability Insurance via our membership of Federation of Astronomical Societies. The Policy Document for 2022-23 (pdf) is available on request (it can be found in the Members section)

Reports from our Outreach & Event activity |
Here you will find reports of MAS events held in the last 10 years or so (i.e. since the MAS web site effectively 'took over' from printed newsletters as the primary means of 'reporting back' to the membership). Some details have been removed to allow for public viewing
The Members Only section contains details of MAS History going back to our formation in 1957

(-) 18 Nov 2017 PUBLIC EVENT Leonids meteor watch - (at White Waltham)
Saturday 18th November, Open to the public from 7 to 11pm (approx), at White Waltham Airfield (SL6 3NJ), home of the West London Aero Club. Talks, telescopes for public observing, meteor watch and star gazing.
Report by Susan. MAS Chairman (with minor edits for public view)
Despite the terrible weather, we had what could be deemed as a successful event from the attendees point of view and it was enjoyable for volunteer members (the skies cleared at 10pm, although by this time there were just 5 or 6 members of the public but we enjoyed a few meteors and very clear constellations).
The aerodrome clubhouse was much better for a cloudy evening as attendees made an evening of it attending talks, having drinks and food, children doing the quiz and a few spending in our 'shop'.
We had 94 attendees which was twice the number I hoped for given the poor weather (it was actually raining as we set-up !)
All six talks took place with full attendance on two and nearly full attendance at the rest. Thank you Tim, Jim and Matt. We had lots of very positive comments about your talks.
Thanks to the following :-
Lesley and Andy who manned the reception and shop and did a great job checking in people, helping with the quiz and manning the store. Lesley did all the notices and tickets for the talks which worked well. Think we have now cracked the best format and organisation.
Steve who carried and set up the technical equipment for the talks (including Stellarium) and the exhibition panels.
Dave H. who, when it stopped raining, 'fielded' the lone telescope, despite the cloud cover, and which visitors gleefully used to look at numerous things (except the stars).
Hugh did a good job in the car park, directing people and entertaining some of the children.
Thanks also to Robin who came as back up for talks and telescope and Percy who bought his kit took photos and answered questions. He did set up around 10pm when the sky was clear.
A Thank You to anyone else who came or who I have missed out, including those members who did bring telescopes but decided not to set up and attended the talks instead.
Wrap-up
Mariem Sobkowiak was the quiz winner (and has now been contacted and awarded the prize)
Despite the weather and low turn-out, we did cover the venue rent cost (some unsold items could be for sale at our December meeting, so bring some cash with you !)
What was good too is that we did have repeat visitors who must have thought it was enjoyable last time, but we also had new people that might now join the society.
We had a very nice 'atmosphere' and people were asking about our next event.
A special thanks to Kristina too who did the publicity and we now have a section on our sign in sheet so we can see where best to post info in the future.
Some if those came through a poster in Costa in Flackwell Heath, one in Stubbings church, schools email, Facebook etc
We can now look forward to our Quiz Night at our December meeting with our usual drinks and mince pies, as well as well as tea and coffee.
