Laser Pens |
Maidenhead Astronomical Society may use Laser Pens as a pointer during outreach events and talks. Any such use will comply with our Laser Pen Policy, which may be downloaded from here (.pdf)
Essentially, only responsible adults pre-approved by MAS are allowed to use a laser pointer at an outreach event. Children under the age of 18 and non-approved adults are not permitted to use the laser pen at any time. Any member of the public bringing their own device (without pre-approval) is asked not to use it during one of our events (and will be asked to leave if they are not willing to comply with this request).
Future Public Events |
This page is dedicated to events promoted by Maidenhead Astronomical Society aimed at bringing an awareness and appreciation of astronomy to the general public. Almost all of the Events listed here are run by MAS (the few that are not are plainly marked)
Details of future planned events are limited to those open to the general public (Members should look in the Members Only section for details of future events not open to the public - which includes most of our local Outreach activities (schools, cubs, brownies etc)).
Future events are listed in date order, next planned first. Be aware that events can change (usually due to the weather :-) ) so please check nearer the event before making a journey
Note. MAS holds Public Liability Insurance via our membership of Federation of Astronomical Societies. The Policy Document for 2021 (pdf) is available on request (it can be found in the Members section)

Reports from our Outreach & Event activity |
Here you will find reports of MAS events held in the last 10 years or so (i.e. since the MAS web site effectively 'took over' from printed newsletters as the primary means of 'reporting back' to the membership). Some details have been removed to allow for public viewing
The Members Only section contains details of MAS History going back to our formation in 1957

(-) 1 Apr 2017 Stargazing Live
Saturday, 1st April 2017, Observing from 7pm at White Waltham Airfield, Maidenhead, SL6 3NJ (home of the West London Aero Club).
Maidenhead Astronomical Society presents:- Stargazing Live !
Chairman's Report
(Ed. by Steve for Public viewing)
What a fantastic night !
I spend much of the time helping out on the Registrations desk which as our second busiest night ever ! Making allowance for the many who did not sign in (which included members of the Aeroclub) who went direct to the telescopes we estimate least 400 attendees.
The talks were run continuously from around 7.30, each with around 25-35 attendees (with some willing to stand at the back). Even running without pause, the lounge bar area was always full - indeed at one time the queue for talks was ran from the lecture room all the way across the bar room !
So a sterling job was done by Tim (who ran his Telescope talk 3 times), Peter H. who presented Digital Photography twice) and Martin D. (who presented the Gravitational Waves talk twice). It was noted that we even had some young children who had come specifically to hear Martins talk (plainly we have many young geniuses in Maidenhead !).
We also had queues at the telescopes right from the start, even though during the early part of the evening the clouds only parted sufficiently to allow the Moon to be seen.
Ed. Before dark we all focused on the brilliant crescent Moon. As it got dark, Mars became visible, as was the lower half of Orion. By about 9pm Jupiter became visible over the buildings to most of the telescopes. When Jupiter was clouded over, we switched back to the Moon, Mars and the Pleiades. The clouds did obscure large parts of the sky, but there was always something visible, even at 10.30pm as we started to pack up
Feedback from visitors was positive. For sure (compared to Braywick) this is a much better venue for observing (as there are no obstructions or lights to the Southern horizon). The car park is much bigger and was able to accommodate all the visitors. The only drawbacks are that the meeting room is smaller than Braywick and our exhibition panels were rather awkwardly placed (as we were asked to keep them at the meeting room end of the bar = hopefully we can change this next year)
The big change for visitors over Braywick was access to a Licensed Bar, which even offered hot food (Chips, Jacket Potatoes, etc). The bar staff were so rushed off their feet they had to call in extra staff !
Another change from Braywick was the early start, in daylight. This, plus the fact that it was the first day of the school holidays, means we attracted a lot more children than normal. Indeed, a number of childrens' coats were left behind (these are being held by the Bar Staff for collection).
The public were the most generous we have had despite the queues. We have struggled to cover costs in recent times, however this time not only did we attract many donations but our 'sales desk' actually sold out of some items ! Over-all, we have not only covered out costs but there will even be a bit left over to help with our outreach activities !
Lastly a HUGE thank you to all the volunteers. Without all of you, too many to name here, this event would not happen. Am hoping you all enjoyed doing your bit so you volunteer next time!
