Laser Pens |
Maidenhead Astronomical Society may use Laser Pens as a pointer during outreach events and talks. Any such use will comply with our Laser Pen Policy, which may be downloaded from here (.pdf)
Essentially, only responsible adults pre-approved by MAS are allowed to use a laser pointer at an outreach event. Children under the age of 18 and non-approved adults are not permitted to use the laser pen at any time. Any member of the public bringing their own device (without pre-approval) is asked not to use it during one of our events (and will be asked to leave if they are not willing to comply with this request).
Future Public Events |
This page is dedicated to events promoted by Maidenhead Astronomical Society aimed at bringing an awareness and appreciation of astronomy to the general public. Almost all of the Events listed here are run by MAS (the few that are not are plainly marked)
Details of future planned events are limited to those open to the general public (Members should look in the Members Only section for details of future events not open to the public - which includes most of our local Outreach activities (schools, cubs, brownies etc)).
Future events are listed in date order, next planned first. Be aware that events can change (usually due to the weather :-) ) so please check nearer the event before making a journey
Note. MAS holds Public Liability Insurance via our membership of Federation of Astronomical Societies. The Policy Document for 2022-23 (pdf) is available on request (it can be found in the Members section)

Reports from our Outreach & Event activity |
Here you will find reports of MAS events held in the last 10 years or so (i.e. since the MAS web site effectively 'took over' from printed newsletters as the primary means of 'reporting back' to the membership). Some details have been removed to allow for public viewing

Present: Adrian, Andy, Robin, Steve, Tim
Report by Steve :
Tonight's goal was Observing (with a capital O !). We had arranged 3 possible dates with the Cubs in the hope that one would be blessed with good weather. Approaching this date the forecast did not look too good, but as the day approached it improved to the point where it looked like we might have a decent 1-2Hr. 'window' centred on 6pm with only 50% cloud, so we decided to go ahead and turn out in force with our telescopes.
On our arrival at 6pm, Amir showed us the path to the rear of the Hall (where the Cubs evidently practice their camp fires) which gave us a decent amount of space and a good view of the Moon high in the west. Tim had bought along a recently acquired short-tube refractor which he had placed on an 'old' EQ mount (with a single (RA) motor, which was not used tonight). Robin had his Schmidt-Cassegrain and I my Dobsonian, whilst Andy had his tripod mounted binoculars to which I added my own Bins and my partner's 'spotting scope' (also on tripods).
As I was setting up, Adrian pointed out Venus just above the hall roof line, so we moved the position of my Dob. to get it into view. Venus was showing as a nice thin crescent in the eyepiece == a perfect opportunity to demonstrate the phases of Venus ! Robin, meanwhile, had 'tracked up' from Venus and found Mars, whilst the various tripod instruments 'under the roof line' were aimed at the Moon. I quickly discovered one disadvantage of tripods - it's hard to 'aim' at angles above 45 degrees or so = and the Moon was at 50 and getting higher ! At high elevations, it's also hard to get your head under the eyepieces. The 'spotter scope' had an angled eyepiece (so was easier to get your head around), but the tripod 'elevation arm' still reached its limit before I could get the Moon into view. Fortunately not all was lost as the tripod head had a 'flip up' platform so I could rotate the 'scope 90 degrees and use that. Tim, also looking at the Moon was also running into problems with his 60 degree angled eyepiece, so I lent him a 90 from my 'bits box'.
We soon spotted a large ominous cloud bank heading our way and covering the sky from the east and even before the Cubs had started to arrive Venus was starting to fade. We did our best to 'hurry them up', however by the time the first Cubs came out to observe, Venus had all but disappeared (and Mars was nowhere to be seen). One or two Cubs did manage to glimpse the crescent shape of Venus - it's amazing how the 10" mirror lets you 'see' through cloud that's too dense for the 'naked eye' - before the Dobsonian was finally defeated by heavy cloud. The rest of the sky was now covered in light cloud and the only thing visible was the Moon, which was showing about 3/4 full, so everything was aimed in that direction. All the Cubs, in 3 groups, managed to get a good look at the Moon through all 3 telescopes and even the Binoculars !
As the sky finally fully clouded over, Adrian and Andy went back inside to deliver the Moon phases talk whilst the rest of us packed up our telescopes. During this interlude, the cubs were busy completing quiz sheets provided by Amir. When I got inside at about 7.30pm, Adrian was just running his Moon formation movie clip to an audience of 24 Cubs with 4 or 5 adult assistants. I was soon tucking into a very nice samosa snack (and Tea) kindly provided by Amir when I was asked to adjust the position of my car as it was preventing another from parking. I got back to find Adrian taking a few questions on the Moon and to find it was decided we just had time to run the Solar System string model. So I rushed back to the car to grab the Planets bag of bits. I soon had the Sun set up and with Robin assisting launched into the 'identify that planet' question session.
The Cubs were very quick with their answers and I was amazed at how much they already knew about the planets - one Cub even getting the right 'order of magnitude' for the time it takes light to reach the Earth from the Sun ! We finished up at just after 8pm with a few questions. As the parents were arriving, the evening finished with a large number of earned badges being awarded. All of the cubs present were awarded their Astronomer badges ! Since we had packed up earlier, I was able to get straight off and was home by 8.30.
