Laser Pens |
Maidenhead Astronomical Society may use Laser Pens as a pointer during outreach events and talks. Any such use will comply with our Laser Pen Policy, which may be downloaded from here (.pdf)
Essentially, only responsible adults pre-approved by MAS are allowed to use a laser pointer at an outreach event. Children under the age of 18 and non-approved adults are not permitted to use the laser pen at any time. Any member of the public bringing their own device (without pre-approval) is asked not to use it during one of our events (and will be asked to leave if they are not willing to comply with this request).
Future Public Events |
This page is dedicated to events promoted by Maidenhead Astronomical Society aimed at bringing an awareness and appreciation of astronomy to the general public. Almost all of the Events listed here are run by MAS (the few that are not are plainly marked)
Details of future planned events are limited to those open to the general public (Members should look in the Members Only section for details of future events not open to the public - which includes most of our local Outreach activities (schools, cubs, brownies etc)).
Future events are listed in date order, next planned first. Be aware that events can change (usually due to the weather :-) ) so please check nearer the event before making a journey
Note. MAS holds Public Liability Insurance via our membership of Federation of Astronomical Societies. The Policy Document for 2022-23 (pdf) is available on request (it can be found in the Members section)

Reports from our Outreach & Event activity |
Here you will find reports of MAS events held in the last 10 years or so (i.e. since the MAS web site effectively 'took over' from printed newsletters as the primary means of 'reporting back' to the membership). Some details have been removed to allow for public viewing

Friday 26th Feb 2016 - Pinkneys Green Scouts in joint session with Boyne Hill Altwood Scouts
Present: Andy, Tim & Steve (report by Steve)
The Scouts meet for 2 hours so this looked like a good chance for some observing - but with Robin unable to attend we would be 'one telescope too few', so an appeal went out for help and Tim was good enough to volunteer !
Of course on the day, the forecast was for 100% cloud - however when we arrived at 6.30 (as it was just getting dark) the sky overhead was clear although we could see clouds on the eastern horizon. On checking with the 'Scout master' we found that the 'big hall' would be available from 7.15 or so, so we set up outside to do some observing first.
We had a good view of Orion to the South, however the North was mainly 'lost in the mist' whilst solid clouds were now starting to push in from the East. Even so, I focused on Betelgeuse as Tim aligned his 'scope and aimed for an (rather optimistic) view of Jupiter. Soon half of Orion was obscured and I switched to the Pleiades as our view to the West was ruined when the floodlights of the football field burst into life
At about 7.10 the whole of both Scout 'packs' came out (there were about 40 of them !) to see what we were up to just as the last of Orion was disappearing behind the clouds. I managed to pick out 3 random stars to the North, still just visible through the misty clouds. As the Scouts were having a quick look, the doors to the main hall were opened and we started to unload 'for real'.
Back inside, Andy was first up with his Moon phases as I set up the string (for the string Solar System) and computer for the Stellarium show. After the 'finding North' and 'day/year star rotation' Andy and Tim took questions as I set up the Pi Photo Frame in response to a 'do we have any photos ?'. Andy started the string Solar System talk and I finished with the layout of the planets.
Tim then ran a 'web cam' movie of Jupiter he 'prepared earlier' from material taken a few years ago, the quality of which was amazing. This showed the 'Great Red Spot' as was (contrast with photo, left, taken a few days ago, where the spot can hardly been seen at all).
He then showed some of his 'occultation' movies (starting with one of the moon occulting Aldebaran on the night of 19/20th January). As Tim was running his Perseid meteor shower movie it was plain the Scouts were loosing 'focus' and it was decided to send them off for a run around outside to burn off some of their excess energy chasing a ball.
Photo, left, by Tim, 24 Feb 2016, one still from about 1000 best frames out of 1500 at 30 fps (5x powermate on 11.8" Newtonian working at F20)
After they came back, I launched the Nevada Desert scale Solar System movie and then Andy ran through his 'distances in space' PowerPoint (which, I'm amazed to say, despite being built on a Windows 10 machine, I managed to to run on my ancient XP laptop with the help of the MS 'pptx' compatibility viewer tool)
The evening ended with a few more questions as Andy handed out the Sky at Night leaflets. A quick pack-up got me home for 9.20 pm.
