Laser Pens |
Maidenhead Astronomical Society may use Laser Pens as a pointer during outreach events and talks. Any such use will comply with our Laser Pen Policy, which may be downloaded from here (.pdf)
Essentially, only responsible adults pre-approved by MAS are allowed to use a laser pointer at an outreach event. Children under the age of 18 and non-approved adults are not permitted to use the laser pen at any time. Any member of the public bringing their own device (without pre-approval) is asked not to use it during one of our events (and will be asked to leave if they are not willing to comply with this request).
Future Public Events |
This page is dedicated to events promoted by Maidenhead Astronomical Society aimed at bringing an awareness and appreciation of astronomy to the general public. Almost all of the Events listed here are run by MAS (the few that are not are plainly marked)
Details of future planned events are limited to those open to the general public (Members should look in the Members Only section for details of future events not open to the public - which includes most of our local Outreach activities (schools, cubs, brownies etc)).
Future events are listed in date order, next planned first. Be aware that events can change (usually due to the weather :-) ) so please check nearer the event before making a journey
Note. MAS holds Public Liability Insurance via our membership of Federation of Astronomical Societies. The Policy Document for 2022-23 (pdf) is available on request (it can be found in the Members section)

Reports from our Outreach & Event activity |
Here you will find reports of MAS events held in the last 10 years or so (i.e. since the MAS web site effectively 'took over' from printed newsletters as the primary means of 'reporting back' to the membership). Some details have been removed to allow for public viewing

Andy & Steve, report by Steve
Our first Outreach of the 17/18 'season' and a nice easy one as Rainbow meetings only last 90 minutes. I decided to take along a recently donated telescope since it was on an EQ mount (and Robin would not be able to attend with his EQ6). Andy was bringing along another EQ telescope, however I felt that we would need one inside and the other outside.
As this would be the first 'outing' of the donated telescope, I did a 'trial assembly' in the kitchen before departing - and it was lucky I did because (of course) it needed a 10mm spanner to assemble which I hadn't packed with it. I quickly found an old 10mm socket that would do the job (after drilling a hole through the top and adding a bolt as a 'handle').
Having sorted that, after lunch I had my next minor panic when I realised I hadn't checked the location of the venue ! A quick eMail sorted that out and, with an early start (5pm setup) I grabbed a quick sandwich before heading off soon after 4.45pm.
By now it was quite dark, so when, as usual, the Sat Nav claimed I had 'arrived at my destination' on the wrong side of the road = so I went straight past it. After a quick U turn I spotted a signpost and drove straight at the gates, only to see Andy sitting patiently waiting for the Guider in Charge to arrive. I was blocking the pavement, so I leaped out of the car and soon had the gates open :-)
Just as we both parked up the Guider in Charge arrived to open up the doors and we were soon unloaded and starting to set up. Andy expressed a wish to remain in the warm, so I 'volunteered' to take on the 'star gazing' task. After a quick introduction to the night sky by Andy (using Stellarium) the Rainbows were split into two groups (there were 16 or so 'Rainbows' plus two older 'helpers' and 2 adult Guilders, so 10 in each group). One half stayed with Andy to layout the 'string Solar System' and I led the other half out front to use my Dob. + the donated Orion.
For once the weather was almost perfect ! We placed a blanket over the 'security light' however we couldn't do anything about the street lights which made it hard to see much by 'naked eye'. Not that there was much to see - most of the planets were nicely lined up with the Sun (so now on the day side of the Earth) and Saturn had set soon after dusk. Even the Moon would not rise until much later in the evening. As we were facing south, roofs even blocked any view of Ursa Major/Minor, however I was able to point out Cassiopeia (around the side of the building) we could establish North. I even managed to 'line up' both telescopes on the rough direction of the Milky Way, so at least there were stars in the field of view.
After everyone had had a look through both 'scopes, and a short Q&A session, my group were ready to return - however Andy was still laying out the Solar System. Luckily the Guider in Charge was able to find them something else to do whilst Andy finished up and soon the second group were seeing stars !
Once again the time seemed to go all too quickly and we were called in for the end of the meeting. At the end of the evening we were presented with a small gift and a very nice 'Thank You' card (which I discovered had been signed by many of the first group whilst waiting for Andy to finish his talk !).
I think the official end time was 6.30, however we did overrun a little - after packing up, we left a little after 7pm.
