Laser Pens |
Maidenhead Astronomical Society may use Laser Pens as a pointer during outreach events and talks. Any such use will comply with our Laser Pen Policy, which may be downloaded from here (.pdf)
Essentially, only responsible adults pre-approved by MAS are allowed to use a laser pointer at an outreach event. Children under the age of 18 and non-approved adults are not permitted to use the laser pen at any time. Any member of the public bringing their own device (without pre-approval) is asked not to use it during one of our events (and will be asked to leave if they are not willing to comply with this request).
Future Public Events |
This page is dedicated to events promoted by Maidenhead Astronomical Society aimed at bringing an awareness and appreciation of astronomy to the general public. Almost all of the Events listed here are run by MAS (the few that are not are plainly marked)
Details of future planned events are limited to those open to the general public (Members should look in the Members Only section for details of future events not open to the public - which includes most of our local Outreach activities (schools, cubs, brownies etc)).
Future events are listed in date order, next planned first. Be aware that events can change (usually due to the weather :-) ) so please check nearer the event before making a journey
Note. MAS holds Public Liability Insurance via our membership of Federation of Astronomical Societies. The Policy Document for 2022-23 (pdf) is available on request (it can be found in the Members section)

Reports from our Outreach & Event activity |
Here you will find reports of MAS events held in the last 10 years or so (i.e. since the MAS web site effectively 'took over' from printed newsletters as the primary means of 'reporting back' to the membership). Some details have been removed to allow for public viewing

Wednesday, 30th March 2016 - Claires Court Holiday Club (Outreach)
Present: Andy, Robin, Steve Report by: Steve
Claires Court Holiday Club is a kids 'day club' run during the school holidays. The plan was to deliver our talk to 3 groups during the afternoon, from about 1.30-4pm. Since the Moon would not be well positioned, we decided to focus on the Sun.
It was, of course, a cloud free morning, but as the afternoon approached the clouds started to roll in from the east. Before setting out I checked the weather forecast for SL6 and discovered the clouds were expected to thicken and reach 100% by 3pm, so I loaded up with all the presentation material (screen, beamer, string solar system etc) as well.
On arrival the clouds had covered almost 80% of the sky and we almost decided to use an in-door venue, however, ever optimistic, we decided to setup outside under a rain shelter and 'hope for the best'. We set the screen up at the back of the shelter and managed to run a power cable from the nearby 'maintenance' room for the projector.
The sun could just be seen behind the gathering clouds, so on the nearby hard-standing in front of the fields, Robin set up his EQ telescope mount with the Solarscope and a short-tube refractor (with attached sun projection screen), I set up my Dob. in 'sun projection mode' whilst Andy assembled his recently purchased 'cardboard sun projector' on a conveniently positioned picnic table (photo, left).
As the first group of children arrived (two classes, a total of about 25 or so) the clouds had totally hidden the Sun, so Robin delivered an impromptu talk whilst I got out the string solar system. During the 'Q and A' session, one or two of the children confessed that they had been shown this demonstration before, however, I'm happy to say, the majority had not.
By the time the planets were in position the clouds had cleared enough to allow some solar observing, so we immediately divided the group onto 3 sets and 'switched' to the pre-positioned telescopes. Although the Sun was sometimes obscured by clouds, all 3 sub-groups had an opportunity to see the Sun 'projection' with all 3 instruments, although the view through the Solarscope was less impressive. Solarscopes don't perform well unless there is a clear blue sky - the slightest cirrus (high) cloud makes seeing surface features hard or impossible, so although we were able to see the sunspot area and a bright area close by, there was only a hint of prominence activity.
Fortunately there was a large sun-spot visible almost at the center of the Sun, which helped 'focus' our talks. The Sun was even bright enough at times to allow me to do the 'this is what happens if you look at the Sun through a telescope' warning demonstration (i.e. burn some holes in a plastic clip-board, photo (from Maidenhead Advertiser), left).
After time for a few questions, the children returned to their classroom. The Sun was still visible and it even looked as if the clouds had started to clear, so we decided to start with solar observing and 'move on' to the string solar system 'second'.
Whilst waiting for the next group to come out (another combined pair of classes I believe), I managed to dig out the 'Eclipse sun glasses' and had these ready just in time. This group was immediately split into 3 sets (there must have been 8-10 per 'set' so the whole group would have been almost 30) and Robin, Andy and I delivered our talks 3 times over again. The organisers must have noticed our voices beginning to fade because some-one kindly came out with coffee (many thanks). The children were so fascinated by the Sun (especially noting how small it really is when viewed through the glasses) that we spent all the alloted time on solar observing. Needless to say, the clip-board demo was the most popular part of my talk (with some boys asking me to show it again ..)
Soon they were being replaced by the final group, a single class of about 15 or 16, again split into 3 sets. By now the Sun had started to set behind the buildings and Robin's mount was in the shadow of the tallest building - however he showed off how fit he was by picking up the entire mount and 'scopes and moving them sideways ! With the Sun still visible, we ran through the solar observing talks another 3 times each and again answering their questions ran us out of time before the string solar system could be shown.
After packing up, we left at about 4.35 and I was 'home in time for Tea' !
STOP PRESS ! The following day I discovered this event had made it into the local newspaper (Maidenhead Advertiser). We appeared on "page 3" and later appeared on the the Advertiser web-site.
