Laser Pens |
Maidenhead Astronomical Society may use Laser Pens as a pointer during outreach events and talks. Any such use will comply with our Laser Pen Policy, which may be downloaded from here (.pdf)
Essentially, only responsible adults pre-approved by MAS are allowed to use a laser pointer at an outreach event. Children under the age of 18 and non-approved adults are not permitted to use the laser pen at any time. Any member of the public bringing their own device (without pre-approval) is asked not to use it during one of our events (and will be asked to leave if they are not willing to comply with this request).
Future Public Events |
This page is dedicated to events promoted by Maidenhead Astronomical Society aimed at bringing an awareness and appreciation of astronomy to the general public. Almost all of the Events listed here are run by MAS (the few that are not are plainly marked)
Details of future planned events are limited to those open to the general public (Members should look in the Members Only section for details of future events not open to the public - which includes most of our local Outreach activities (schools, cubs, brownies etc)).
Future events are listed in date order, next planned first. Be aware that events can change (usually due to the weather :-) ) so please check nearer the event before making a journey
Note. MAS holds Public Liability Insurance via our membership of Federation of Astronomical Societies. The Policy Document for 2022-23 (pdf) is available on request (it can be found in the Members section)

Reports from our Outreach & Event activity |
Here you will find reports of MAS events held in the last 10 years or so (i.e. since the MAS web site effectively 'took over' from printed newsletters as the primary means of 'reporting back' to the membership). Some details have been removed to allow for public viewing

17th Oct. 2016(a) - Outreach for Science Week at Holy Trinity School (year 2)
Present: Andy, Robin, Steve
Report by Steve :
After a break since last month, we ending up being 'booked' for two events on the same day !
The weather forecast was 'variable' but looked reasonable for the first (afternoon) at Holy Trinity School, so we decided to go equipped for some Sun observing.
On arrival at about 12.30 I was glad to find some cones had been laid out in the (very small) car park next to the 'these gates to be kept locked at all times' giving access to the playground allowing us to park nice and close to where the kit would need to be setup.
The weather consisted of a series of fluffy mid-level clouds moving quite quickly across the sky with some decent breaks, so we set the Solarscope and my Dob. in 'sun projection' mode directly outside the classroom. Since this was next to the playground during the school lunch break we soon had an audience watching us aligning the kit. I quickly got out the Eclipse glasses to provide a distraction whilst Robin tried to get the Solarscope to 'track' the sun on it's ancient mount. We were soon 'ready to go' and one of the students volunteered to collect the Eclipse glasses most of which had gone 'walk about' to the ends of the playground !
After a quick discussion with Robin we decided to start with the whole class inside with 'finding North' and then break the class into 2 groups (of about 12-14 each). One group would remain inside for the 'constellations' talk whilst the other would go outside for sun observing (when possible) or 'string solar system' layout (when clouds blocked the view) and then swap. A quick check with the PE Teacher confirmed that we could use the top end of the playground for the 'string solar system' layout whilst the PE class used the rest of the area.
We were lucky that the clouds broke up just enough for both groups to have a chance to use the Solarscope and see a couple sun spots (one, a pair close to the equator, the other only visible as a single near the top edge of the sun at the "2 O'clock" position).
Both groups were most attentive and all managed to 'guess that planet' from the clues given. This was the first 'outing' of Saturn's new rings (the previous paper ones having finally disintegrated :-) ) however they did rather catch the wind and try to escape (along with Mars). Plainly some extra weight would be needed for a future outside show.
As we finished up at about 3pm the clouds cleared and we had a perfectly blue sky, however we had to rush off home for a quick supper before the evening event. Whilst I was eating, the clouds gathered again and it was soon pouring with rain !
