  Laser Pens

Maidenhead Astronomical Society may use Laser Pens as a pointer during outreach events and talks. Any such use will comply with our Laser Pen Policy, which may be downloaded from here (.pdf)

Essentially, only responsible adults pre-approved by MAS are allowed to use a laser pointer at an outreach event. Children under the age of 18 and non-approved adults are not permitted to use the laser pen at any time. Any member of the public bringing their own device (without pre-approval) is asked not to use it during one of our events (and will be asked to leave if they are not willing to comply with this request).

  Future Public Events

This page is dedicated to events promoted by Maidenhead Astronomical Society aimed at bringing an awareness and appreciation of astronomy to the general public. Almost all of the Events listed here are run by MAS (the few that are not are plainly marked)

Details of future planned events are limited to those open to the general public (Members should look in the Members Only section for details of future events not open to the public - which includes most of our local Outreach activities (schools, cubs, brownies etc)).

Future events are listed in date order, next planned first. Be aware that events can change (usually due to the weather :-) ) so please check nearer the event before making a journey

Note. MAS holds Public Liability Insurance via our membership of Federation of Astronomical Societies.
Our Policy Document for 2017-18 is available as a PDF download here

Reports from our Outreach & Event activity

Here you will find reports of MAS events held in the last 10 years or so (i.e. since the MAS web site effectively 'took over' from printed newsletters as the primary means of 'reporting back' to the membership). Some details have been removed to allow for public viewing

The Members Only section contains details of MAS History going back to our formation in 1957

Note that this page does not include Observing session reports (which have a separate page)

(-) 28 Sep 2015 Total Lunar Eclipse

28 Sept 2015, total Lunar Eclipse. Report by Steve B Photo: ../Outreach_&_Events/photos/2015-09-28_1-48-Dscf5586.jpgWith a virtually perfect night for observing, I stayed up way past my usual bed time, seting up my Fuji S1 on a tripod at maximum zoom. The Moon, of course, defeated the automatic metering - I had to set Manual mode -3 stops to get anything decent = and the auto-focus was very 'hit and miss' = however I did get a few decent shots (from about 1:45 onward) as the Moon went into the Earths shadow.

Photo: ../Outreach_&_Events/photos/2015-09-28_2-47-Dscf5648.jpgUnlike a Solar Eclipse, it was very hard to 'spot' the moment the Moon enters the Earth's shadow - the photo above, left, was taken at 1:48 and just shows a slight darkening to the top right - but this is already well after the start of the eclipse at about 1:15

It is only when the Moon is well into the Earth's shadow that it becomes really obvious - the photo right, was taken about an hour later, at 2:47am

Photo: ../Outreach_&_Events/photos/2015-09-28_LunarEclipse-Dscf5676.jpgThe 'blood Moon' effect (Moon illuminated by sunlight refracted through the Earth's atmosphere, which steals all the blue light (Rayleigh scattering) leaving mostly the red) doesn't really 'kick in' until the Moon is almost totally out of direct sunlight .. and this is when I discovered the Fuji S1 isn't any better than any other camera when it comes to 'auto-focus' on faint objects. Needless to say, manual focus (which I managed to find after some frantic searching in the manual) is almost impossible to achieve at high zoom, so the 'best' photo I have is just before 'totality' (when I managed to focus on the final sliver of light) at about 3:05am, 6 mins before that start of the full eclipse (03:11am). I spend the next 30 mins visual observing with some 15x50 bino's before retiring to bed, so missed the end of the full eclipse (at 4:23am).

Report by Percy K. Not expecting good weather, I made the decision to retire to bed early, however when I saw the cloudless sky I soon changed my mind. Photo: ../Outreach_&_Events/photos/2015-09-28_IMG_9590a1.jpgI setup my 6" refractor on G11 mount at home.  Imaging is not my speciality, but I decided to give it a go anyway and coupled the refractor to a Canon 600D camera. I took several shots of the moon from start to finish of the event (see example, left).

In the end I stayed up for the whole duration of the eclipse. I setup at 23:00hrs (Sunday), and hit the pillow at 05:00hrs (Monday). It was a long night, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Glad I did it as I did not fancy waiting until 27 Jul 2018 when there will be a lot less to see (ed: the Moon will be below the horizon at the start of the eclipse).

The next total Lunar eclipse visible from UK will be July 27 2018. Whilst the start will be below the horizon, we will see totality in the early evening at a rather more reasonable time (9:21 to 10:13pm). The next after that (visible from UK) is not until Jan 21 2019 (note - Lunar Eclipses happen two or 3 times a year, but typically only one is 'total' and often not visible from UK)
Report by Colin A. I managed a 'complete' set' of over 130 images !! Imaging began at approximately 01:30 hours and finished around  05:45 hours. All the images were taken using a Nikon D5100 at prime focus on an 8 inch Skywatcher reflector. ISO ranges from 100 (for the brightest images) to 800 for totality. Shutter speeds were from 1/500 sec ~  2 sec. They were imaged from my front garden, so I had street lights and houses to contend with. Ed. These images are amazing and I'm looking at how to show them best - for now here's a few examples :- Photo: ../Outreach_&_Events/photos/2015-09-28_LunarEclipse_DSC0010.jpgPhoto: ../Outreach_&_Events/photos/2015-09-28_LunarEclipse_DSC0016.jpg

Photo: ../Outreach_&_Events/photos/2015-09-28_LunarEclipse_DSC0086.jpg
The 'white spots' seen to the left in the above photo are stars made visible by the drastic reduction in the intensity of Moonlight.
