Laser Pens |
Maidenhead Astronomical Society may use Laser Pens as a pointer during outreach events and talks. Any such use will comply with our Laser Pen Policy, which may be downloaded from here (.pdf)
Essentially, only responsible adults pre-approved by MAS are allowed to use a laser pointer at an outreach event. Children under the age of 18 and non-approved adults are not permitted to use the laser pen at any time. Any member of the public bringing their own device (without pre-approval) is asked not to use it during one of our events (and will be asked to leave if they are not willing to comply with this request).
Future Public Events |
This page is dedicated to events promoted by Maidenhead Astronomical Society aimed at bringing an awareness and appreciation of astronomy to the general public. Almost all of the Events listed here are run by MAS (the few that are not are plainly marked)
Details of future planned events are limited to those open to the general public (Members should look in the Members Only section for details of future events not open to the public - which includes most of our local Outreach activities (schools, cubs, brownies etc)).
Future events are listed in date order, next planned first. Be aware that events can change (usually due to the weather :-) ) so please check nearer the event before making a journey
Note. MAS holds Public Liability Insurance via our membership of Federation of Astronomical Societies. The Policy Document for 2022-23 (pdf) is available on request (it can be found in the Members section)

Reports from our Outreach & Event activity |
Here you will find reports of MAS events held in the last 10 years or so (i.e. since the MAS web site effectively 'took over' from printed newsletters as the primary means of 'reporting back' to the membership). Some details have been removed to allow for public viewing

Report by Steve
Present: Tim H, Andy T, Adrian J, Steve B
The plan was to arrive by 5.45pm with a view to completing the set-up by 6.15. However with the very restricted parking near the meeting hall, we all arrived by 5.30pm, well in advance. As usual, the weather failed us, with 100% cloud covering the sky - earlier in the day it had rained and the ground outside was still wet and slippery, as we discovered whilst unloading out kit.
I had my 10" Dobsonian, Tim / Andy a pair of binoculars on a tripod and Adrian an 80mm short-tube refractor (he had recently acquired) also on a tripod.
With the short meeting time of only 1 hour, it would be difficult to cover all the topics needed for the Beavers Space Badge. So we decided to reduce the Solar System to a 'show and tell' (the hall was very small and even at 'half scale' the 'string Solar System' would not have fitted anyway).
By 6.30 all? 18 Beavers had arrived - along with perhaps 9 adult 'leaders' - and Andy introduced us to the 'pack'.
Tim started off with a Stellarium show, highlighting the constellations of Orion and the Plough (Great Bear) which he used to show how to find North. By 'speeding up time' he demonstrated how the stars moved across the night sky and how the planets followed one another up from the horizon. The Beavers were very enthusiastic, asking many questions.
As time was pressing, questions had to be cut short and I was next up. I talked my way from the Sun to Neptune at great speed, only stopping for a few questions along the way. I ended by mentioning some of the Space Missions that visited the other planets. The Beavers had been most attentive and, after fielding a few more questions, I handed over to Andy.
He delivered a Power-Point slide show highlighting 5 famous astronauts (Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin, Valentina Tereshkova, John Glenn, Niel Armstrong and Tom Peake). When he asked them who was the second man to walk on the Moon, we were most impressed when they knew the name (Buzz Aldrin), and even more impressed when 2 of the 'pack' knew the name of the 3rd Apollo 11 crew member who remained in orbit (Michael Collins). Andy finished up with some of the Space Missions to the Planets, showing actual images of each planet, along with some more facts about each one.
Finally, the pack was divided into 3 groups for a quick 'change over' talk about each of the 2 telescopes and binoculars. We knew we were short of time, so tried to keep each telescope talk as short as possible, however we ran out at the end of the second change-over.
The Hall would be used by the Scouts next, so, after receiving a 'pack salute' we had to load and leave promptly. I loaded the last item at about 7.30 pm.
